Contact UsWhat does nitrous oxide sedation feel like?
Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” induces a feeling of relaxation and calmness. Patients often experience a light, floating sensation, and some may feel a mild tingling or warmth throughout their body. Nitrous oxide reduces anxiety without causing unconsciousness, allowing patients to remain aware but deeply relaxed during dental procedures.
Does nitrous oxide come with any side effects?
Nitrous oxide is generally safe but may cause mild side effects, such as light-headedness, nausea, or headache. These effects are typically short-lived and fade quickly once the gas is no longer administered. Since the sedative effects wear off rapidly, most patients feel almost or completely back to normal soon after their treatment.
Who is a candidate for nitrous oxide sedation?
Candidates for nitrous oxide sedation include patients with dental anxiety, a low pain threshold, sensitive gag reflexes, and those undergoing longer procedures. It’s also suitable for children who may struggle to sit still during treatment. However, individuals with respiratory conditions or who are pregnant should consult with our team as well as their primary care physician to determine if nitrous oxide is appropriate for them.
Can I drive myself home after receiving nitrous oxide?
Yes, patients can typically drive themselves home after receiving nitrous oxide. Unlike other forms of sedation, nitrous oxide wears off quickly, usually within a few minutes post-treatment. Once we stop administering the gas and the patient breathes normal air for a few minutes, they generally regain full alertness and can resume normal activities, including driving.
