What Are Dental Emergencies?
June 25, 2023 3:03 amDental emergencies are serious dental issues that require urgent medical attention. There are many factors that can contribute to a dental emergency, such as accidents and injuries, untreated infections, poor oral hygiene, and failing to wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth or a mouthguard if you play sports.
These are some common dental emergencies:
- Broken or Cracked Tooth
- Persistent Bleeding Gums
- Knocked-Out Tooth
- Severe Toothaches
If your tooth breaks or cracks, it can have sharp edges that can damage surrounding teeth or the soft tissues in the mouth. Broken teeth can also allow bacteria to infect your tooth and gums, which can lead to bone loss.
Uncontrollable bleeding from the gums or other soft tissues in the mouth caused by dental trauma, an accident, or gum disease needs urgent treatment.
A tooth that is loose or completely dislodged needs immediate dental attention. For a knocked-out tooth, gently pick it up by its crown instead of its roots. Rinse it off with milk or water and place it back into the socket if possible. If not, put it in a glass of milk or water and take it with you to your emergency dental appointment.
Intense or long-lasting tooth pain can be a sign of an underlying dental issue, such as infection, decay, or severe tooth damage. Check in with an emergency dentist right away if you’re experiencing significant tooth pain so the dental problem can be treated before it worsens.
